Remebering Siew Teng

“ Leong Siew Teng was the second longest-serving Hall Manager at Raffles Hall, NUS.

Over the past decade, during my time as RHA Chairman — first under Master Ho Chee Kong and later Master Stella Tan — I came to know him well. I found him earnest, responsible, and exceptionally dependable in execution.

As a person, he was warm, articulate, and brimming with ideas. He led with a deep understanding of issues on the ground. He got things done. Problems did not linger around him — they were addressed, resolved, and moved forward.

He lived for his work — and in many ways, for Raffles Hall itself. It was not uncommon to see him somewhat dishevelled at the end of long days spent managing operations. That was simply who he was: immersed, committed, and present.

After losing his mother, he often reflected on opportunities lost and a sense of diminished focus. Yet he continued to speak of bold plans and ambitious investments — visions that revealed both hope and restless aspiration.

Alas, it was not to be. He was taken early, in his prime — at a time and in a manner of his own choosing.

In many ways, this too was true to Siew Teng — defiant, unconventional, and resolutely non-stereotypical. A rebel to the end.” Sonny

"Leong Siew Teng, seen around the Hall in one of our post-Covid visits in July 2022. He was a familiar and friendly face often seen during our many return visits, always hospitable and ready to get off his seat or look up from whatever he is doing to greet and receive us returning alumni. Raffles Hall was not just his job; it looked like it was his life. It’s a pity he’s gone. I continue to count him as one among the many enduring faces and heart warming memories of Raffles Hall. Rest in Peace, my friend." Lim Eng Hai

"I did not know Leong Siew Teng well as he was after my time in Raffles Hall. I was in Raffles Hall in the first half of the 70s. I am a few degrees removed from the social connectivity here. But I am impressed and touched by the spirit of camaraderie and solidarity shown here in the all-ready and proactive willingness of those who had stayed in Raffles Hall during the tenure of his office in Raffles Hall to help out on his post-mortem affairs bearing in mind that these are non-kinsmen. I can only surmise that Leong Siew Keng as the Manager of Raffles for 20 plus years must have been of tremendous help to the residents of the Hall and had made an indelible mark on them. This speaks loud volume of the goodness of Leong Siew Keng." Teo Eng Leong

"I’ll remember Siew Teng for his tireless energy—making us laugh through emails, schooling us at foosball, and always being the heart of the hall. He gave us his best, even if we may not have seen the wounds he carried. His ending doesn't erase the kindness he showed a struggling student like me, nor the light he left behind in our lives."

"I was very grateful to him for his strong support and help during the period of the Phoenix Forum; he’d helped me connect with all Rafflesians he had contact with and through him, many new connections were made. He was instrumental to help make the Pheonix Forum a success.  He was very kind. May he rest in peace. 🙏" Wei Lee
